It has become a custom for many fans of the drinks sold by the giant Starbucks: payment through the company’s mobile application. However, it is at the center of accusations by the consumer protection coalition in Washington state.
According to this powerful association, Starbucks used questionable techniques aimed at “exploiting” its customers from its app, as well as its gift cards. Starbucks would force users into a cycle where they would never fully use their credit and would therefore have to systematically refill their account.
900 million unclaimed
In a 15-page complaint, the association details how the American company traps its customers in its own internal payment system. In fact, it is only possible to reload your Starbuck account in increments of 5 dollars, spending a minimum of 10 dollars. Preventing you from easily reaching a zero balance.
“Starbucks manipulates its payment platform to encourage consumers to leave unspent money on their gift cards and app. A few dollars left here and there on a payment platform may seem trivial, but they add up.” reveals the campaign director of the Washington Consumer Protection Coalition.
We learn that Starbucks has declared no less than $900 million unclaimed over the past five years.
The global coffee giant, whose shares have been affected for several weeks, adds that it is possible to complete a purchase in its salons with your Starbucks credit and thus get rid of the rest.
