Google Pixel 7 review: The best value for money smartphone on the market?

After the Pixel 7 Pro, it’s time for the “standard” version of Google’s high-end smartphone. Far from being the poor relation, the Pixel 7 has many advantages to claim for a more affordable price.

Released at the same time as the Google Pixel 7 Prothe pixel 7 it takes up the main lines while making some concessions to reduce the price.

Starting at €649 (for 128GB of storage), it’s €250 less expensive than its better-equipped peer in photography in particular. A few minor differences that deserve a closer look at the more “standard” little brother, but endowed with the same skills or almost.

The strengths of the Pixel 7

The clearest photo, but still at the top.

The Pixel 7 has only two photosensors on the back: a 50 MP wide angle and a 12 MP ultra wide angle (125.8° field of view). If you dreamed of playing with the telephoto lens and zooming perfectly, you will have to trust the Pixel 7 Pro. The macro mode is the other big absentee. But the Pixel 7 also harnesses the talents of Google’s artificial intelligence and the power of the internal Google Tensor G2 chip to work miracles.

It’s almost impossible to miss a photo with a Pixel 7, day or night. The AI catches up with almost everything thanks to its correction tools. Magic Eraser lets you erase unsightly items (or people if you like), Anti-Blur catches up with weird movement, and it’s even possible to add a blur to the background after you take the photo.

In addition, Google will systematically suggest improvements to beautify your shots, be it filters or brightness retouching.

The zoom is still good, although it does not go up to x30 in digital or x5 in optical (you have to settle for an optical x2). At maximum zoom x8 the loss of quality is noticeable, but it is still more than respectable and much better than some competitors.

At night, the Pixel 7 is also comfortable, as has been Google’s trademark for several years. On the front we find the same camera as the Pixel 7 Pro, capable of taking group selfies thanks to its ultra wide angle. It can shoot in 4K/60fps and is quite good in low light.

A premium design

As with the Pixel 7 Pro, Google has redesigned the look of its smartphones. The Pixel 7 is elegant with its matte aluminum edges and above all it is good in the hand to not slip (it is IP68 certified to protect against submersion and resist dust). It is available in Snow White, Volcanic Black and Lime Green.

Note that the 6.3-inch OLED screen is smaller than the Pixel 7 Pro, but very well made, with excellent brightness. On the other hand, you have to settle for an image refresh rate of 90 Hz versus 120 Hz. Only the most experienced gamers will really notice the difference, or those who have already tried 120 Hz.

At the rear, the photographic module has been repositioned in a black bubble, within a full-width metal strip. This allows you not to be embarrassed when using the side buttons (volume, standby) or holding them down. The glass back is quite resistant to shocks of all kinds, except for fingerprints. On the front, Gorilla Glass Victus resists scratches well.

software features

Like the Pixel 7 Pro, to which we invite you Reread the proof on this specific part., the Pixel 7 benefits from features that set it apart from other Android smartphones (Android 13 here). Google notably integrates instant translation and subtitling tools for any video, but also the possibility of having a transcription of a voice message.

Pixel 7 Weaknesses

Not very fast charging

Google has announced that it has improved the autonomy of its smartphones and it must be said that this has been a black point in recent years. The Pixel 7 wears a little better and easily lasts the day, a little longer in standard use. But don’t expect miracles. In a game or video, you can even see your autonomy drop rapidly. Above all, it takes 40 minutes to recover 60% autonomy and almost 1h40 for a full charge, at a time when Oppo or Xiaomi are below 20 minutes.

heats up easily

The Pixel 7 tends to heat up quickly if you’re gaming, filming, or browsing a bit. It is quickly felt under the fingers.

conclusion

For the price of an advanced mid-range smartphone, the Google Pixel 7 is a bargain. It has many attributes of the top of the range (photographic quality, specific functions, fast and efficient processor, refined design) for less than 700 euros, a little more if you want 256 GB of storage. There is arguably no better value for money in its segment.

If you make concessions against its older brother, the Pixel 7 Pro, those who hesitate between the two models have to think twice. If quality photo is your priority and high resolution zoom is not a must, go for it!
