Xiaomi launches a smartphone that is fully charged… in 9 minutes

During the presentation in China of its new Redmi Note 12 range, Xiaomi struck a chord with its Redmi Note 12 Explorer. Thanks to its fast charge of 210 W, it recovers 100% autonomy in 9 minutes.

This is the new competition in the telephony industry. After vying for the biggest screen, the fastest chip, the most photosensors on the back of the device, the most impressive battery, smartphone makers are now competing in another arena: fast charging.

Chargers over 200 W

For several years, manufacturers have multiplied the promises of fast charging to less than 20 minutes for the most advanced. Among the rivals we find Oppo, Realme, Vivo or Xiaomi. And the latter has just set a record with its new Redmi Note 12 Explorer Edition, presented last week in China. This promises to fully charge in just nine minutes and recover 66% in five minutes.

Thus, it erases the previous record of the Vivo IQOO 10 Pro that reached 100% in 10 minutes thanks to its 200 W charger. To do this, the Redmi Note 12 Explorer Edition relies on a 210 W fast charger, the most powerful on the market . for a 4300 mAh battery. A relatively modest capacity that, on the other hand, should not guarantee record endurance for the device.

But the feat is still significant and should attract the attention of those who shudder as soon as their phone falls below the 50% remaining autonomy bar. To achieve this, Xiaomi explains that it has worked on its GaN charger (with gallium nitride that heats much less than the usual silicon and also conducts electricity better for better energy capacity) to better distribute the charging power, but also on the cable what’s wrong with it. Reinforced for added security.

Fast charging, poor battery life?

Often it is in terms of resistance over time and the number of recharge cycles supported that can make the difference. Oppo and Vivo have announced that their smartphone promises at least four years of battery quality maintenance (more than 80% of its capacity). Xiaomi has not communicated on this point at the moment. By comparison, it takes almost 1h30 to charge the iPhone 14 Pro Max with the compatible 27W charger.

For now, Xiaomi has only announced its Redmi Note 12 Explorer Edition for the Chinese market, where it should be available in early November. It incorporates a 6.67-inch 120 Hz OLED screen, aluminum and glass design, triple photographic module with a 200-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle sensor and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. As always, it is the value for money of the range that is in fashion, with the first models at less than 200 euros.
