Because since the attempted assassination of the former American president, Elon Musk has officially given his support for the presidential elections on November 5.

By multiplying false information and scandalous comments, Elon Musk is now more divisive than ever, with possible consequences for his economic activities. As Politico reminds us, a Trump election could be decisive for Musk, whose activities such as SpaceX and Tesla depend directly on public procurement or public policies.

To try to prevent Kamala Harris from coming to power, Elon Musk is deploying at least radical strategies, even unprecedented ones. For several hours, he has not hesitated to invest a million dollars a day to finance a lottery aimed at convincing participants to vote for Trump, but also to broadcast advertisements with totally antagonistic comments.

Competition and door to door

The latest example is none other than a contest launched by Elon Musk: one million dollars, every day until the vote on November 5, promised to a voter in one of the seven key states. Those most likely to influence elections, which are sometimes decided by a few tens of thousands of votes: Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin and North Carolina.

A rather clever operation: to try to win the million dollars, it is essential to sign a petition in defense of carrying weapons, an idea that will probably attract voters with ideas compatible with those of Donald Trump.

But to be drawn – and automatically receive a check for $47 – it is essential to provide your phone number, as well as that of a “sponsor”, that is, a voter from the same state, also attracted to the same conservative. ideas. You must also agree to receive a phone call from Donald Trump’s support teams, paid for by Elon Musk, to verify your identity.

For $47, Elon Musk, who has already invested more than $75 million in Trump’s campaign, offers himself two phone numbers corresponding to two valuable potential voters in key states, to which are then his hundreds of employees recruited in the occasion. responsible for calling them to better convince them to go to the polls. A practice that, according to some experts, could be similar to vote buying and, therefore, potentially illegal.

Target Jewish or Muslim voters

But this petition is far from Elon Musk’s only tool to help Trump win. Like all campaign teams, Donald Trump’s is increasing ad distribution, especially on social media. And here too the Tesla boss put his hand in his wallet.

According to the specialized site 404 Media, the ads financed by Elon Musk are directed directly at Kamala Harris on the social network Snapchat, in two of the seven key states. The goal: convince Jewish and Muslim voters to vote for Donald Trump, conveying a message about Kamala Harris… perfectly contradictory.

Thanks to the targeting tools offered by Snapchat, Trump’s team was able to spread a message in areas of Michigan where the Muslim community is large: Kamala Harris then presents herself as a friend of Israel, with the aim of stimulating hostility among voters. – supposedly in favor of the Palestinian cause – towards him.

At the same time, also thanks to Snapchat, Pennsylvania voters were also targeted by Elon Musk’s fund. This time, in an area where there is a strong Jewish community. The advertisement broadcast is then completely different: Kamala Harris is presented as an ally of Palestine. With always the same objective: to create hostility towards the Democratic candidate in a decisive state.

An effectiveness yet to be demonstrated

In addition to his fortune, Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, can obviously count on his own social network, a desire to buy Twitter to re-elect Donald Trump in 2024, although the joking tone was – once again – used by Musk, when he mentioned the project to his children.

Since his support for Donald Trump, Elon Musk has served as a sounding board for his ideas. Firstly, by transmitting false information provided by the former president’s team, for example about immigrants who supposedly ate cats.

More recently, Elon Musk used his own platform to create a new pro-Trump account, simply called @America. Decorated with a yellow badge, intended for private organizations, the account can gain the trust of Internet users, who may legitimately think that it is an apolitical account. However, Musk has used it massively to broadcast his pro-Trump petition for several days.

Despite Elon Musk’s huge financial investment, the effectiveness of these approaches remains to be proven. According to the Reuters agency, the door-to-door campaign carried out in favor of Donald Trump in key states, in particular thanks to the data collected by Elon Musk’s petition, is currently struggling to achieve its objectives.

The cause: lack of data on the recipients to contact. It is a race against time to get new phone numbers, which could explain the intensification of financial rewards for potential voters promised by Elon Musk, starting with the million-dollar-a-day reward.

In addition, not all the keys to the US presidential elections are reproduced on Twitter. Despite the millions of dollars contributed by Elon Musk, Donald Trump is far from allowing as many ads as Kamala Harris on Facebook.

According to figures from Meta, Facebook and Instagram have sold more than $100 million in ads in favor of Kamala Harris in the last three months, compared to just over ten million dollars for Donald Trump.
