“We hope that this dishonest attack fails”: the CEO of Signal threatens to leave France if the drug law is adopted

Although the bill is currently examined in the National Assembly, Meredith Whittaker has published a virulent message in X.

The drug trafficking law continues to be debated. Currently examined in the National Assembly, it includes an amendment that would allow the authorities to monitor messages such as WhatsApp or Signal to impose the creation of a stolen reach.

For several years, the messages exchanged in these applications have been quantified, which means that only the sender and the recipient have access to it. But, if the drug trafficking law is voted, this will no longer be the case, provided that the messaging is obsessed. A change that is far from pleased messages. Meredith Whittaker, CEO of Signal, expressed his unhappy on X this Wednesday, March 19.

Threaten

In his virulent message, Meredith Whittaker once again threatened to distribute his safe messages in France if the bill is voted. At the end of February, she had already declared, to the registration that she would withdraw the signal of the countries that force the mails to allow the authorities to access user figures.

Like many others, Meredith Whittaker considers that it is impossible to introduce access to a particular person. In other words, if a stolen door is created, everyone can be used by all. That is why Meredith Whittaker expects the bill, which she describes as “dishonest attack”, “will fail and will be the last.”
