Pushed by smartphones and social networks, 42% of the French consider spending too much time on the screens, consulted four hours a day on average throughout the population, according to a barometer published on Wednesday.
“The youngest are distinguished by a more intensive use than the rest of the population, but also for greater sensitivity to this overexposure,” says this report produced by the Telecommunications Regulator, the ARCEP, with the General Council of the Economy, the National Agency for Territorial Cohesion and the Research Center for the study and observation of living conditions (Credoc).

In detail, two thirds (67%) of the French consult social networks every day and 59% of them consider that their screen time is “excessive.” Results of a survey conducted in a sample of 4,066 people.
In total, 84% of people say they use the Internet every day, an increase of almost 15 points compared to 2015. The barometer attributes this increase to the generalization of smartphones, since 91% of the population has one, more than the computer (89%) or the tablet (54%).
Sometimes, at the center of debates due to their high volume that their detractors consider that it grows in consumption, mobile plans are widely used below their capacity. Therefore, almost half of the subscribers do not use their entire offer, while 30% of them have a package containing 100 GB of data.
The barometer also points out that smartphones remain longer and longer: 27% of consumers keep them more than three years, against 16% in 2020. Despite this, the purchase of reconditioned phones increased little: in 2024, 21% of users bought a device used, compared to 19% in 2022.
