“It’s my body in real life and you laugh”: in Tiktok, the “chubby” filter accused of encouraging gross

In Tiktok, Internet users try the “AI Chubby” filter, capable of modifying the bodies to show how they would look with several more kilos. If some find the fun trend, others remember that they can promote eating disorders.

Another filter that awakens outrage on Tiktok. In a photo, two friends stop in their arms and pose a glass in their hand. To have fun, then try the “AI Chubby” filter, capable of modifying the bodies to show how they would see several more pounds.

“I think it will be a child,” jokes the Tiktok user, which implies that it seems pregnant. The publication has more than 1.2 million subscribers.

A filter that is divided

For several days, more and more users try this famous chubby filter. Some explain that the filter gave them motivation to return to sports. Other joke explain “regret having ordered” at the restaurant the day before.

“If that does not scare me and does not push me to go to the gym, I don’t know what he will do,” wrote a Tiktofer who has just used the filter, in a video seen almost 13 million times.

The problem is to divide Internet users. If some find the trend fun, others point out that the filter encourages roughophobia and eating disorders.

“I cannot explain to what extent this trend is toxic and disrespectful,” deplores a surfer. “It is fashionable, it is shame to the body. Grosophobia has never been so widespread,” added another. “This trend is harmful and can cause eating disorders. The mortality rate linked to these diseases is dangerously high,” said one last.

Some content creators have also shared their video outrage. This is the case of Stella’s solo adventures.

Insulation and eating disorders

“If you use this trend, it reaches a culture of people who use it knowing to make fun of people who are considered overweight or chubby, or use it knowingly to complement your body,” adds the English creative personnel.

An opinion shared by health experts. “The filter sends the message according to which having a hot air or having a different body type is comic and unattractive,” said Carly duty, a psychologist, on News.com. “When people use this filter, many people with several morphologies see comments about their real appearance and imagine what they could feel when the goal of the joke is.”

“This can lead to isolation, trigger eating disorders and trigger or exacerbate current mental health problems such as depression and anxiety,” he lists.

This is not the first time that a Tiktok filter has been controversial. In 2023, the bold glamorous beauty filter was accused of causing dysmorphobia, especially among girls. Given legal threats, the application of short videos finally withdrew access to minors.
