Inflated prices, carcinogenic additives … why do you have to distrust sweets for sale in Tiktok

In Tiktok, live preparation lives and other confectionery commands. However, some of these imported products from the United States, often sold more expensive, are dangerous for health.

“Do you think Vincent will finish his great order alone or to share with someone?” She says, at the origin of the Candydouceur account. Surrounded by a multitude of colored and sweet boxes, the young woman is preparing to pack another order of sweets and other sweets.

This time, in the package, a coca oreo, a Mars, a Mrbeast chocolate tablet, a coca -cola of peach, more than two kilos of sweets of all kinds, nursing confectionery and a fantasy with grapes.

She then closes the package. You are ready for shipping. This little staging, the young woman sometimes reproduces her several times per hour. Your goal? Prepare and package the orders of sweets, confectionery and drinks of all kinds for its almost 200,000 subscribers in Tiktok. She details Each candy From the command and, sometimes, it presents the latest news in stock, the form of “Teleachat”.

Products twice more expensive

And she is far from an exception. Candymix, Magic-Candy, Candy Paradis or even Candy Paradise: For some years, purchases lives have multiplied on the platform. Creators try to sell clothes, jewels or even confectionery. This last category is also particularly popular on the platform. As proof, the hashtag #bonbon exceeds 300,000 publications.

And lives have become a real business. On average, 20,000 barges extend every day before direct candymix (one million subscribers), another account specialized in the sale of sweets.

In three years, the young woman has registered almost 80,000 orders. It is not surprising since most of these victories are almost not found in France. Here, there are no classic fantasies, M&M of Chocolate or Haribo. Customers prefer bacon sodas, nerd sweets or famous peanut butter.

Rare products, therefore, and that, border vendors understood it well. And do not hesitate to inflate prices. Therefore, a two -resess package costs 2.19 euros on the Candymix site, against 1.5 euros in the store. Hitchie sweets are offered to 12.5 euros per kilo in stores, compared to 22.9 euros per kilo at Candymalo.com. The Brittish Côte de Boeuf chips, with 11.60 euros per kilo in the store, reach 28.72 euros per kilo, in promotion, in Candydouceur.

More restrictive standards in the EU

A questionable practice, but remains legal, reminds Zoé Kerlo, toxicologist from Yuka. “It is quite legal to sell sweets sold by other countries, from the moment the products meet all the health standards of the country where it is sold,” he observes.

And that is where the shoe is pinched. Because European standards are much more restrictive than their US equivalents, particularly with respect to food additives. “There are practically no prohibited food additives in the United States, while there are many in the EU,” explains the toxicologist. “In Europe, there is a list of additives that can be used. Each additive has been evaluated by EFSA (the European Food Security Authority, Editor’s note). In the United States, this is the reverse logic. We can use everything by default unless there are proven risks.”

At the same time, the maximum concentrations in additives, for example, in soft drinks, and the presence of pollutants and pollutants are much more supervised in the EU than in the American soil.

Modified DNA, carcinogenic additives and hyperactivity

As a result, several prohibited products in France are on sale at these sites. Therefore, Fanta Straise, which contains twice the dose of dye authorized for Fanta fishing, is marketed on the Candymix site. However, dye E129 is accused of aggravating hyperactivity in children.

M&M peanut butter (although this is not written on the label) and certain nerd sweet ranges contain titanium dioxide (E171). A remarkably prohibited dye in food, in France since 2020 and throughout the European Union since 2022. It has been classified as a possible carcinogenic for humans since 2006. “It is suspected that it is a mutagen, which means that it alters the DNA of our cells,” specifies the toxicologist. The products are on sale in Magic-Candy.

So many colors linked to possible risks of carcinogenic effects and hyperactivity. Again, the product is sold in Magic-Candy. Contacted by Tech & Co, the General Directorate of Food (DGAL) did not answer our questions.

To avoid falling on the panel, consumers can use the Yuka application that allows food products to be scanned and cosmeticsTo obtain information about the composition of the product. Another technique: address a Meticulous study of labelssince sellers are obliged to indicate the complete list of ingredients. At least in theory.

According to Tech & Co’s observations, several sites omit to show the ingredient lists. Others do not indicate legal notices or health warnings. Finally, all hygiene standards are not necessarily respected. This is, for example, the case of Candy Paradis that, during the preparations for control of loose sweets, does not wear gloves. Contacted by Tech & Co, no business has followed our requests.
