Even suspended from Facebook since the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, Donald Trump continues to be at the center of internal company discussions. As revealed by the US channel CNN, the teams in charge of supervising the fight against disinformation on the social network have received directives on the former US president. At issue is his recent declaration of candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, which implies a change of rules from Facebook’s point of view.
No policy check
“We define as a political figure any candidate for an election, the people in office and, by extension, the members of their cabinet, as well as the political parties and members of the campaign,” recalls the internal note, which specifies that Donald Trump is therefore once again considered a political figure.
However, the word emanating from political leaders “is not eligible” for the procedures to combat disinformation, recalls Facebook. “This includes the words of political figures, as well as photos, videos, or other content created by these political figures or their campaign teams,” the note added.
For several years, Facebook has worked with journalists around the world so they can assess potential viral misinformation and help the platform issue a warning. Journalists who will therefore no longer have to work on comments made by Donald Trump.
If the former president himself no longer has a Facebook page, his statements are still widely disseminated on his platform. As CNN reminds us, the official page of his team (Team Trump, 2.3 million subscribers) is still available and, therefore, will not be consulted. Among his many publications, however, are false information about electoral fraud, mentioned by Donald Trump and at the center of the motivations of the rioters on Capitol Hill.
