Since November 14, the National Assembly has been examining the draft law on orientation and programming of the Ministry of the Interior (Lopmi), led by the Ministry of the Interior Gérald Darmanin. Among the main points of development foreseen by the text, a modernization of the police institution, with the desire to better accommodate the victims.
An experiment is mentioned in the report attached to the bill. It consists of installing a “reception robot in certain territories”, inside police stations, particularly for victims of domestic or sexual violence.
No futuristic droids
For the moment, it is still difficult to know what the scope of this experimentation will be and what form these robots will take, although certain fantasies have been ruled out by the text’s rapporteur, the Renaissance deputy Florent Boudié.
With BFMTV, the Ministry of the Interior specifies that “the assembly methods of the reception robot will be the subject of a study prior to the launch of the experiment”, adding that “the physical reception of victims of domestic and sexual violence will of course favor violence (adults, minors) to foster the person’s confidence and guarantee individualized support”.
In fact, such a robot could integrate a screen to transmit video content in the reception area, or to better inform the victim of their rights.
The text also provides for the establishment of a complaint by videoconference, by offering everyone the possibility of contacting a police officer using a computer or a simple smartphone to carry out the operation. During the debates in the National Assembly, the Minister of the Interior insisted that this will be an additional option and that every citizen can always choose to file a complaint at the police station.
