Telegram can defend yourself by explaining “go beyond its legal obligations”, some countries are not of this opinion. According to a document reported by Reuters, Vietnam has just been prohibited from the social network.
The reason is the same as when Pavel Durov, its founder, had been arrested in France and then accused: the local government criticizes the request for not cooperating in its fight against the alleged crimes committed by its users.
Censorship or lack of cooperation?
Announced on May 21 in a decree signed by the deputy director of the Telecommunications Department of the Ministry of Technologies, the measure must enter into force on June 2 with local operators. These must “implement solutions and measures” so that it is no longer possible to use the telegram in the country.
This prohibition follows a report by the Federal Police, which explained that 68% of the 9,600 telegram channels in the country violated the law, particularly due to acts of fraud, drug trafficking and “suspicion of terrorist acts.” In the same report, it was established that thousands of opponents used the application to criticize the government.
The Vietnamese government argues that Telegram does not cooperate with the authorities to share user data when requesting them related to criminal surveys.
A country headed by the Communist Party, Vietnam is a victim of the strict censorship of its media and social networks by the government. The dissent is repressed and platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and Tiktok must eliminate the content considered “toxic” or “offensive”, even “anti-state.”
In Europe, Telegram cooperates more with the judicial authorities, provided that requests for information come from an independent judge, not from the Prosecutor’s Office.
