At the end of April, the European Union decided to inflict a fine to Apple for breach of its regulation in digital markets (DMA). It was a preliminary decision, but is now full through a 67 -page document published on May 27, 2025.
The fine, which is 500 million euros, therefore, sanctioned Apple due to its lack of action to comply with European regulations, and has three months to fulfill it, under a fine of interest to pay.
Apple asked to act under the penalty of a new fine
Apple, however, has much less time to configure changes within its mobile operating system. In fact, the European Union leaves only two short months for the American manufacturer: the decision was made at the end of April, so it remains 30 days before the Cleaver fell, and a new fine is sent.
In its decision, the European Union deplores the lack of will for Apple, which would always prevent developers from informing users who can use other means of payment than that of the App Store. A function that has been established, but to which costs of 27% are added in each transaction, against 30% through Apple.
This new condition, launched at the time of digital services regulations, did not convince the European authorities.
Apple, who had tried that he should not pay the fine due to an agreement considered too new, while highlighting his “good will”, has been fired from this request. However, the company plans to appeal this decision.
However, difficult to see “goodwill” when Apple does precisely everything to avoid complying with the new European rules. The costs of 27%, officially there to ensure transactions, were miscalcious by developers who wanted to do without Apple Store’s payment system. In addition, the DMA was needed so that it was finally possible in iOS to choose its default applications and free itself from certain limitations, such as the arrival of the competition, to iPhone and iPad.
