A life on the Internet, completely disconnected from the world? Unthinkable for most French. In fact, for 25 years, technology has changed our daily life in depth. BFM Business and Tech & Co also offers a special day this Thursday, June 5 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the emblematic program that I am by email.
For the occasion, BFM Business questioned, with the help of Kantar, about the technological habits of the French.
Therefore, almost half of the French (47%) can no longer live wifi -free connection or mobile data. Among 16/24 years, it is even more impressive. More than 58% of young people surveyed say they cannot do without it.
If the French seem to be able to deprive themselves of cameras, drones or even contactless payments and chatbots, consulting their emails has become essential. 46% of the French say they cannot do without it. A proportion that increases to 55% for children 35/49 years.
As expected, computers are third in the essential uses for 37% of the French. GPS, Wikipedia or social networks and electronic commerce platforms are also essential for 20 to 27% of the French. Note that the smartphone does not appear in the classification.
Really essential kitchen robots?
Other more surprising devices arrive very high in the ranking. Therefore, more than 7% of the French cannot live without cooking robots. A device considered more essential than video surveillance systems, consoles or robot and chatbots vacuum cleaners.
As expected, several brands have been established in the hearts of the French permanently. Therefore, Apple appears as the most striking brand of the last 25 years for 39%of the French, far ahead of their main competitor, Samsung (20%) or Google, which does not exceed 8%. And, if Chatgpt is only cited by 2% of respondents, the famous Operai chatbot is particularly popular among young people. 11% of the 25/34 years believe that the tool is the brand that has the most technological innovations marked in the last 25 years.
A common denominator? All these brands are Americans. In fact, the French are struggling to identify French innovations. An observation that is verified on the side of the technological icons. If Elon Musk (24%) and Steve Jobs (13%) dominate the classification, Xavier Niel is not so successful. Free founder is only cited by 2% of respondents.
But the new French companies can still maintain morality. Almost one in 10 French believes that France is an innovative country in terms of technology.
A generational fracture
AI is attracting French young people more and more. If 22% of 65 years and more use conversational chatbots, the figure hides 81% for children under 35 years.
A generational fracture that is explained by the fears of the elderly. About 40% of more than 65 years are in particular the concern for the environmental impact of AI, the loss of the critical mind, the increase in false news or even the possible damage due to privacy. The 16/24 years are much more optimistic. A young person is 5 years old, he is gaining time, access expanded to information and the possibility of important advances in research through AI.
And either for studies, work, vacations or mental health and vacations: young people are varied. As proof, more than 40% use AI … to write poems.
