The iPhones follow each other and look alike. Or almost. If the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max took the same design as the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, newcomers are following suit. We find in the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max the same chassis with straight edges in stainless steel and the back in shock-resistant Ceramic Shield glass, with the three photo sensors.
The iPhone 14 Pro has an Oled display called Super Retina XDR (6.1 and 6.7 inches), which still incorporates ProMotion technology for an adaptive image refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz. Two sizes are available: 6, 1 and 6.7 inches.
But the differences are still there. Starting with the official disappearance of the notch that has caused so much debate since its appearance on the iPhone X. The TrueDepth camera on the front has been redesigned and now takes up less space. It must be said that Apple has decided to transform the now two physical shocks that house the facial recognition system and the selfie camera, which are distinguished when looking very closely, into a new extremely intelligent touch zone. Therefore, a part of the screen remains permanently black and, between the two sensors, the area is tactile to allow the opening of a pop-up window by pressing on it.
Dynamic Island, mad wit
The potentially unsightly hardware is thus masked by a software trick that takes the form of a black bar spanning the two sensors and is called a dynamic island (“dynamic island”). A first name that says a lot about Apple’s interest in this function that offers additional options to the user such as music viewing, call notifications, Apple Plans, stopwatch, etc.
Many home applications can take advantage of this section of shortcuts in this way (by keeping your finger pressed on the black band, it is quickly accessed). All you have to do is launch the app which will then take place in the bar animation. It is even possible to display a second application that will take place right next to it. The iPhone 14 Pro AI then highlights the one it thinks is most essential (or replaces one of the two with a third app you’ve opened).
This could be Apple Maps for your navigation or a timer that ends quickly. Every app has its animation, even Face ID which is now carried out in use. On both sides the time and battery and network indicators appear, as well as a lot of information (AirPods connection, active camera, etc.)
Other apps from third-party developers will come later when they’ve taken over the technology and iOS 16, which will shift the usual notifications to the bottom of the screen, thus freeing up the top. Many uses could emerge from this true innovation.
Because the screens adorned with a single punch, or a double as was sometimes the case with Samsung, have become legion. But until then no manufacturer had really known how to take advantage of it. At Apple, there’s no question of compromising facial recognition, which retains its reliability and responsiveness. In use, this “dynamic island” is quite intuitive. It has the merit of filling the upper part of the screen with use instead of leaving an empty area.
The screen is always awake
If Dynamic Island is the most visible novelty of the iPhone 14 Pro, this – like its older brother Pro Max – still has some tricks to claim. As for the screen, it only takes a few seconds or minutes to see it suddenly lose its brightness. It must be said that the new vintage is proud (finally) of the arrival of the “Always-on” function (the screen always on).
The iPhone will never go to sleep again and the time will always remain visible, but in a less bright way, as will notifications and widgets, through iOS 16, officially rolled out on September 12. This permanent screen preserves autonomy thanks to the presence of a ProMotion screen whose variable refresh rate can go down to 1 Hz (one update per second only) to save battery power.
At the back we find the same photographic module, but at first glance it seems a little larger. Apple announces that it has modified the sensor to be wider, with the added benefit of a new definition of 48 megapixels on the main sensor. The iPhone 14 Pro will be able to take in much more light for more detailed and brighter shots, especially in low light.
The iPhone 14 changes the mini for the maxi
Alongside the iPhone 14 Pro, two new iPhone 14s were also introduced. And this year, Apple abandons the mini and compact format for a maxi version of the entry model in its high-end series. The iPhone 14 Plus comes with a 6.7-inch Liquid Retina display, the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
But here, there is no ProMotion technology in sight. This decision of the Apple brand makes it possible to have a more affordable large screen without going to the Pro Max version whose power and multiple possibilities are sometimes too expensive to be useful to many.
This has the merit of allowing a display with much more information and above all a real comfort of video if the 6.1-inch screen seems a bit small to you. This is the big difference between the two iPhone 14s (with the autonomy that we could not test) that above all offer a choice of size. Unlike the iPhone 14 Pro, the chassis colors are also more acidic and fun (purple, red, light blue, black, starlight).
Prices and availability of the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro
Prices are triggered by the exchange rate against the dollar, which is not very favorable to the euro, but also by the addition of VAT and various taxes. If in the United States the price of the iPhone 14 Pro does not change compared to the iPhone 13 Pro ($999 without taxes), in France it shoots up from 1,159 euros to 1,329 euros now forever 128 GB of storage. The iPhone 14 Pro Max now starts at 1,479 euros. For 1 TB of storage, 1,979 euros will be needed for the iPhone 14 Pro, 2,129 euros for the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Both iPhone 14 Pro sizes come in darker Space Black, Silver, Gold, and Deep Purple. Pre-orders start on September 9th and will be on sale on September 16th.
The iPhone 14 starts at €1,019 and the iPhone 14 Plus at €1,169 for 128GB of storage. They will arrive in Red, Blue, Purple, Midnight Black, and Starlight. If the iPhone 14 will arrive at the same time as its acolytes, the iPhone 14 Plus is desired. It is expected to be in stores on October 7.
