Certainly, tea safety, the US application that allows women to leave an opinion about the men they know, leave something to be desired. As 404Media reports, the platform was the victim of a second security defect, much more important than the previous one.
Last week, the application acknowledged having undergone data violation of around 72,000 images, including photos and management licenses for users. TEA then said that the incident “referred to an old data storage system that contained information more than two years.”
More than one million private messages
But according to an investigator interviewed by 404Media, the pirates would have had access to a second most recent database that contains private user messages. In total, the researcher could obtain more than 1.1 million messages, all sent between 2023 and July 2025. In these conversations, Internet users discuss very private issues such as abortion or potential. Some women discover that they come out with the same man or that they are wrong.
The problem is that these messages are far from anonymous. Internet users can easily identify despite their nicknames. In fact, many of them shared their real names and telephone numbers through these private messages, or even personal information, such as the address, the model of a car or a physical description.
For its part, TEA says that “he continues to work tirelessly to contain the incident.” “We are working to identify all users whose personal information has been involved and we will offer free identity protection services to these people,” added a spokesman.
Since July 28, the functionality of private messages has been “temporarily not available.” The company also told users that a “current survey involves experts in external cybersecurity and the FBI” was underway.
TEA, which claims more than 4.6 million Internet users, reached the first place in the classification of the application store last week. In addition to anonymously evaluating men present in other appointment applications with red or green flags, the application also allows women to request advice on meetings and access tools such as the verification of judicial history.
The platform quickly divided Internet users. If users make sure they feel safer, some men are concerned about possible derivations and denounce an unwanted concept.
