A few days after presenting his pixel 10 and his pixel watch 4, Google trusts his future projects. Or rather in the products that do not plan to develop. With Bloomberg, the American giant said he was not going to start in the folding smartphone market removing valve phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7.
If Samsung and Motorola have embarked on this adventure, Google does not want to do it, favoring a format of the folded tablet type. And for the moment, the company is more concerned with the fold of these devices, considered “extremely painful” by Shakil Barkat, responsible for the teams and services of Google.
Therefore, the company will continue to offer only a folding format with Pixel Pro Fold, which allows you to have a smartphone that, once developed, is more like a tablet.
Google always bets on connected glasses
Google also suspended the development of a new tablet model, after having launched a first in 2018 and another dedicated to the house connected in 2023. It is waiting for “a specific future is emerging for this category of products.” In the same way for connected rings. Because the company does not imagine a world where users would move much more than their smartphones, connected shows, its headphones and connected glasses.
Google is based on glasses, wishing that this product category is an integral part of its future. After the failure of Google Glass, the company released its future glasses with artificial intelligence during its annual developer conference in May. But it is not certain that they are marketed.
Despite this, Google does not expect the connected glasses to replace the smartphone. If the company believes that the latter will not disappear, it believes that one day it could be reduced to a device, among others, in the ecosystem instead of being the omnipresent center that is today. “The visual content is the key problem to be solved before an important change occurs,” said Shakil Barkat.
“Maybe we can be happy with a smaller phone if we use a screen,” said Rick Osterloh, vice president of the Division of Products and Services in Google. With your teams, you are currently working on small glasses for glasses.
