Google finally presents the future of searches in Europe with its AI mode, but not in France

The American giant announced that its AI-powered search mode, thanks to Gemini 2.5, is now available in more than 200 countries, including Europe. But, in a new setback, France escapes again and again from this new function.

After some delays, Google Search is finally enriching its AI mode in Europe, adding support for 36 new languages in about fifty states and territories around the world. This brings the number of countries that can access the smart search function to more than 200.

Google thus states that its AI mode (and AI Overview) will be gradually implemented in Europe from October 8, 2025 and will be accessible through its website and its application for Android and iOS.

Good news then? No, bad news, France is still missing the boat and will have to do without it for a few weeks, or even a few long months, they told us on Google. A regulatory issue still needs to be resolved and will take time. If you want to take advantage of it, the only solution is a VPN and a Belgian IP address, for example, to access a French-speaking interface.

How does AI mode work?

Looking at Google’s web interface, everything seems normal. But to the right of the search field a button appears: AI Mode. It allows you to use Google’s multimodal intelligence, Gemini 2.5, to perform your web searches for you. By multimodal, understand that it is possible to request it in several ways, in writing, orally or through an image.

The change begins when you understand the question. It can be longer, more complex and, above all, presented in natural language. Google also indicates that, in countries where the service is already available, users now ask questions two to three times more than usual searches.

Once validated, Google will start behind the scenes, instantly and completely transparent to you, its “query fan-out” technique, which could be translated as “query demultiplication”. In fact, the AI will split your question into subtopics and send a large number of subqueries on your behalf.

According to Google, this allows you to deepen the search, accessing more websites to obtain a written, detailed and constructed answer. As is the norm in chatbots, links are integrated at the end of the paragraph to read more details about the topic or consult the source. But the sources, in fact, are also displayed in a sidebar to find and consult them independently if necessary.

It is also possible to delve deeper into the given answer by asking a complementary question, always in natural language. In short, Google’s AI mode is the next step in search according to Google, in addition to artificial intelligence, although intelligent algorithms have long been working behind the scenes to satisfy us. Anyway, it’s worth noting that the search history can be viewed later. On the other hand, the results are not. They are generated on each new query.
