Many would have preferred to hear it before Christmas, but it was finally at the beginning of January that Sony made this announcement: the PS5 is no longer sold out.
Released in November 2020, the console was hit hard by a global semiconductor shortage that slowed down production significantly. Again last Christmas there was a shortage of stocks to meet the demand.
Thanking PlayStation fans for their patience, Jim Ryan acknowledged that Sony “had to handle unprecedented demand in the face of global challenges in the last two years.”
30 million consoles sold
He also took the opportunity to reveal the console’s sales figures: around 30 million units at this stage, or 5 million more than when they were last announced last November. By comparison, the PS4 has surpassed 117 million copies, less than 10 years after its release.
The end of the PS5 shortage is therefore good news for Sony, which will finally be able to increase sales of its console while its great rival, the Xbox Series, has caught up with it in sales in the United States.
Still, the announcement must now be followed by the facts: as of early January, the PS5 is still hard to find, although some major brands offer a few copies for sale.
