Available from Monday, September 12, iOS 16 It does not yet have all the options and features provided by Apple. Among them, “Clean Energy Charging”, presented by the Californian company in a press release published earlier this week, which will allow iPhones to optimize charging times.
Coming to iOS 16 in a future update, this option aims to reduce the iPhone’s carbon footprint by charging it when the network uses cleaner power sources. Specifically, iOS 16 will be able to activate the charging of the smartphone when the electrical networks are powered by renewable energies and, on the contrary, suspend it, when the energy supply comes from polluting sources.
Clean energy charging, user manual
At the moment, no details have been revealed about how the “clean energy charge” works. However, in an article published this week, the site 9to5Mac indicates that iOS 16 has a background feature. The latter will collect data on carbon emissions from authorities such as the US Energy Information Administration (United States), taking into account the user’s location. From a server, the operating system will also pull forecasts about carbon emissions.
Apple would then use this information to determine when to charge the iPhone to reduce emissions. For the rest, as the site points out, Apple already offers features to optimize the charging of its iPhones. But until now, these features were only aimed at increasing battery life.
For now, “Clean Power Charge”, which will be released in the coming weeks via a future iOS 16 update, will only be available to users in the US. There is no information indicating the rollout in other countries around the world and whether the feature is required or can be manually disabled in the phone settings.
