TikTok launches TikTok Now to copy French social network BeReal

With TikTok Now, the app takes the idea of a spontaneous photo or video when the notification appears.

The war is waged between the different social networks. So when a good idea comes up, you can also copy it directly. After Instagram, it is TikTok’s turn to launch a feature similar to the concept of BeReal, a French social network that is experiencing dazzling success.

The idea of BeReal? Instead of posting posed and retouched selfies, the app offers to take a double photo (one with the rear camera and one with the front camera) instantly. A way to offer authentic and “true” content, as the BeReal slogan wants.

A dedicated app

If Instagram is currently working on a similar feature, TikTok just officially launched its own version this Thursday, September 15. Called TikTok Now, it copies the principle by letting you take a 10-second video or double photo, once a day, when a notification appears.

If the photo/video is posted within three minutes, it will be marked as “on time”. Otherwise, it will be specified that it has been done with delay.

Available in the United States, this feature will be “in testing in the coming weeks”, particularly in France and “accessible directly from TikTok or in the new dedicated TikTok Now app”.

TikTok also specifies certain limitations regarding confidentiality, particularly regarding location. A person under the age of 16, for example, will see their account set to private by default.

BeReal, an application created by Frenchman Alexis Barreya, has been a resounding success: it was downloaded 43.3 million times between 2019 and last August.
