Google launches Bard, its “chatbot” to compete with ChatGPT

Google launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool on Monday called Bard, which appears to be a response to its competitor Microsoft’s ChatGPT and which has achieved great popularity in just over two months of existence.

In a post released on the corporate blog and signed by the CEO of Google and Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, it is explained that Bard has been tested so far with trusted people, before being released to the general public “in the coming weeks.”

Without elaborating, Google says that Bard takes its information from the Internet “to provide new and high-quality answers,” noting that these can be used for creative purposes, but also purely informational.

The technological giant also gives some examples, pointing out that Bard will work so that a nine-year-old boy understands James Webb’s super-telescope or to learn more about the great forwards of current football.

Other uses for Bard’s chat could be, according to Pichai’s note, planning a baby shower, comparing two Oscar-nominated movies, or preparing a menu based on what’s available in a fridge.

The first version of Bard will be limited, to adapt to computers with less capacity, while Google manages to increase the “feedback” [informações de retorno] that will allow you to reach new types of users.

This gradual process will make Bard gain speed and quality, underlines the note from the CEO.

Nowhere in the blog post is competition mentioned, but analysts have pointed out that this new AI tool from Google is clearly the tech giant’s answer to its main competitor, Microsoft.

ChatGPT has grown in popularity and versatility, but so have its ethical limits for educational purposes in schools and universities.
