Just four months after its creation, Microsoft dismantles its team dedicated to the metaverse

Microsoft says goodbye with its entire team dedicated to the development of its industrial metaverse, that is, 100 people.

Codename: Industrial Metaverse Core. Last October, Microsoft formed a team specifically dedicated to developing software interfaces used to power metaverse-related projects. The company ends the initiative and fires the entire team, according to the media Information.

Microsoft had formed this team to work collaboratively with companies in the healthcare, energy, and even retail sectors. Microsoft assures the media CoinDesk “Stay engaged with the industry metaverse. We’re focusing on the areas of the industry metaverse that matter most to our customers and won’t see any change in how they’re supported.”

This decision is part of a context of crisis for the technology sector. At the end of March, Microsoft plans to lay off 10,000 people that is, almost 4.5% of its workforce.

Priority to ChatGPT

Tech giants face public skepticism about the metaverse. Microsoft continues to invest in the field with its HoloLens mixed reality headsets, but it has halted activities at AltspaceVR, which it acquired in 2017 and is due to close its doors on March 10, 2023. Facebook would spend more than $1 billion a month on its metaverse Horizon, as he struggles to find followers.

Microsoft’s main challenge in recent weeks continues to be the integration of ChatGPT into its Bing search engine, after having invested 10 billion dollars in Open AI and trying to compete with Google.
