One in five French people have already used ChatGPT

A survey carried out by the Odoxa survey institute indicates that ChatGPT artificial intelligence has aroused the curiosity of the French, 19% of whom have already used it since its launch.

In or out of the tech world, the global enthusiasm for ChatGPT artificial intelligence has not wavered since it went online last November. And in this context, France is not far behind as many French have been interested in the chatbot developed by OpenAI by testing it.

Thus, according to a survey by Odoxa for various media, including BFM Business, and published on February 16, one in five French people have already used the chatbot, or 19% of those surveyed. In detail, 8% of the French say they are “impressed by its capabilities” compared to 11% who say they were not moved by this technology.

Regarding the technology, digital and innovation professionals contacted, 41% have already used the chatbot: 28% have used it and were impressed by its capabilities compared to 13% who have tried it without feeling downright subjugated.

In total, half of the French (50%) have already heard of ChatGPT. A score that amounts to 86% of the technology, digital and innovation professionals requested, specifies the survey. Scores that symbolize the rapidly acquired notoriety of artificial intelligence.

Support students instead of banning ChatGPT

Since its appearance, ChatGPT has also been a cause of concern in the world of education. In question, the many students who use the tool so that it does their work for them. Thus, certain educational actors, from the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Science Po) to New York schools, have prohibited their students from using it.

A reasoning against the current of the French. Asked about the position that National Education should adopt regarding ChatGPT, 64% of them are in favor of supporting students in the use and understanding of AI and affirm that the world of education should “explain to students how this [ChatGPT] consists, its interest and its defects so that students use it intelligently”.

A score that reaches 75% among the technology, digital and innovation professionals surveyed. On the other hand, 35% of all French people and 25% of technology, innovation and digital technology professionals surveyed believe that ChatGTP should be completely banned and students who use it should be penalized.

Methodology: survey carried out on a sample of 1,005 French representatives of the French population, over 18 years of age and interviewed online, and a sample of 302 technology, digital or innovation professionals interviewed online from February 2 to 6, 2023.
