This is a special event that will likely anger a fair number of players. In its latest update available this Tuesday, Gran Turismo 7 gives access to a new championship: Race Together (let’s drive together, in French). The PlayStation flagship racing game offers to face four competitors controlled by the artificial intelligence Sophy, designed by the manufacturer of the console. The only problem is that he has already won races against professional drivers.
In these races, accessible only on PS5, the opponents have a less powerful car than the player’s. But depending on the difficulty level (beginner, intermediate, expert), this performance gap narrows. The ultimate test, a one-on-one mode that allows you to take on artificial intelligence on a level playing field.
Improve player experience
This competition will be available for a limited time and is scheduled to be removed from the game at the end of March. “It’s mostly a new game concept and we want to test it, get feedback and then use what we’ve learned and refine it,” said Peter Wurman, head of Sony AI.
In his previous work, Gran Turismo had already confronted players with artificial intelligence from Sony. Furthermore, it is a joint effort between game studio Polyphony Digital and Sony’s video game and artificial intelligence branches that made the development of Sophy possible.
Over two races in July and October 2021, the AI initially leaned before winning against the best Japanese Gran Turismo drivers.
