Internet on top of the mountains or deep in the virgin jungle? If few people will ultimately need this service, Starlink will offer it anyway: For $200 a month, you’ll be able to have worldwide access to the constellation’s satellites.
So far the promise. In detail, Elon Musk’s company is toning down a bit: Speeds can drop and sometimes even cut off, the company says. You will also have to invest $599 in the basic kit (mainly a satellite dish) that will need to be installed. Clearly, the device is aimed primarily at backpackers in vans roaming the white areas.
Especially since Starlink is far from being deployed in every country in the world. North America, Europe, Australia, Japan and parts of South America have licensed the company, yet very few African countries are concerned even if the first deployments do go through.
Finally, notice to sailors: Starlink’s offer is for dry land only.
