How ChatGPT will make online scams harder to spot

According to cybersecurity firm Darktrace, the emergence of ChatGPT could make scam attempts via email or SMS more sophisticated.

The artificial intelligence and computer security company Darktrace believes that the arrival of the ChatGPT program risks increasing the sophistication of “phishing” or phishing attempts, it said Wednesday in a statement.

“Darktrace does not believe that ChatGPT has so far significantly lowered the barriers to entry for cyberthreat actors, but believes that (the program) may have contributed to increasing the sophistication of phishing emails, allowing malicious actors to launch more personalized and ultimately successful attacks.”

Increased language complexity

The company considers the number of attack emails “stable” since the launch of ChatGPT but sees an increase in its “language complexity, including text volume, punctuation,…”, implying that “cybercriminals could refocus.” their efforts in designing more sophisticated scams that exploit user trust.”

The British group specialized in computer security also publishes a net profit of the group in participation of 86% in one year in the first semester ended at the end of December of its staggered exercise, up to 581,000 dollars.

Despite sales rising 36% to $259 million, profit was dampened by skyrocketing costs and a jump in research and development spending.

A sharp drop in the stock market

Darktrace is also lowering its cash flow forecast due to an “accounting readjustment” of taxes paid in connection with shares received by some of its directors following its 2021 IPO.

The stock rose 1.55% to 268 pence on Wednesday shortly before 10:30 GMT on the London Stock Exchange, but is down more than 40% in a year.

Markets.com analyst Michael Hewson recalls that Darktrace shares have fallen considerably over the past year and a half, briefly trading around 1,000 pence (11.24 euros) before falling below 200 pence for a while (2 .26 euros) when doubts arose about the transparency of the company and accounts

Until then, “anything (the company) says to the market will lack credibility,” concludes Russ Mould.
