IA: why the (real) photo of CRS in front of the Constitutional Council sows confusion

With the rise of artificial intelligence imagers, the question often becomes whether a photo is real. But this Thursday, it is a true snapshot that raised questions.

There is little chance of running into Emmanuel Macron taking out the trash. No more seeing Pope Francis walking around wrapped in a white jacket. But, is it possible to get a hundred CRS before the Constitutional Council? A photograph taken on Thursday caused problems.

Until now, it was possible to be surprised by an unusual shot. But since the advent of artificial intelligence imaging tools, wonder has given way to suspicion. At the end of March, several photos created by AI made him smile. But during the twelfth day of the mobilization against the pension reform, a very unusual scene occurred, even unprecedented: a multitude of CRS and mobile gendarmes protecting the Constitutional Council, before its decision on the pension reform on April 14 at 6:00 p.m.

Modified AI Detectors

The snapshot of Stéphane Mahé, a photographer for the Reuters agency, traveled the social networks, but also the media, particularly on the front page of the newspaper. Release. We can see in the distance the doors of the Constitutional Council and, in the foreground, a hundred CRS and mobile gendarmes in close ranks. For about thirty meters, rue de Montpensier, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, fills with police units, helmets on their heads, shields in hand.

Only problem: many Internet users believed in an image generated by artificial intelligence. More ominously, the tools that are supposed to detect AI-generated images have also been had. The journalist in the newspaper. the parisianNicolas Berrod, subjected the image to two detection tools: that of Hugging Face, a company created by French and specialized in AI, and that of Hive Moderation.

In the first case, Hugging Face estimates at 82% the probability that the shot is a montage generated by an AI model. In the second, Hive Moderation ensures that there is no doubt (0%) that the photograph is real.

Clues to authenticate an image

In March, fake images of Donald Trump’s arrest were shared on social media. This representation of the human tide of authentic photography by Stéphane Mahé also resonates with an image created by artificial intelligence. A representation of Donald Trump, shared by his son, walking down a street, followed by a crowd.

However, some clues still make it possible to detect a fake image. The hands remain the weak point of the AI software for the moment. Counting the number of fingers (often too large) is sometimes enough to identify a creation of the machine. Faces in a crowd can also appear washed out or distorted. As for the texts, they are often illegible. So many perfectly realistic elements in the photo of the police in front of the Constitutional Council. Waiting for further improvements in artificial intelligence.
