After American public radio, it is the turn of the Canadian public audiovisual sector to get out of Twitter. The CBC-Radio Canada group announced Monday that it would cease its activities on Elon Musk’s social network, after labeling it as a “government-funded medium” on one of its accounts.
“Our journalism is impartial and independent,” writes Radio Canada in a message posted on its account dedicated to information. “To claim otherwise is false. This is why we are suspending our activities on Twitter.”
“Publishing independence”
“By challenging our independence with this misleading label meant to mislead the public, this network questions the accuracy and professionalism of the work done by our journalists,” the group said in a statement, encouraging Canadians to follow it on other platforms.
Last week, US public radio NPR became the first major outlet to leave Twitter in protest of the network’s new policies.
Since he bought the firm from the blue bird, Elon Musk has relaxed the moderation of content on the network, leaving behind many users banned for messages that incite hatred or fall into misinformation. It also laid off heavily, reducing the group’s workforce from 7,500 to fewer than 2,000 employees.
