Twitter wants to reduce the visibility of hateful content by giving it a specific mention

Following criticism of failures in its moderation, the social network will enable a mark on “invisible” tweets because they violate its policy on “hateful conduct.”

Twitter was already reducing the visibility of certain content: from now on, the social network will report tweets affected by this measure, announced its Blog.

“Limited visibility: This tweet may violate Twitter’s rules against hateful conduct”: This is the insert that will now display content deemed hateful, visible to both the authors and other users.

The first tweets in question are those that go against his hateful conduct policy (“hateful conduct”), but Twitter says it wants to extend this flagging in the coming months to all content whose visibility has been affected by violating its usage rules.

If Twitter does not give more details about how this content will be less favored by the platform, it details in another article several measures that can be taken to limit the visibility of a tweet: exclude it from the search results, from the “For you” or “Subscriptions” tab, lower the position of a tweet in replies to a “thread” (series of tweets), restrict “likes”, replies, sharing, the possibility to pin it on your profile, etc.

Also, no advertising will be placed near these tweets, Twitter claims, while Elon Musk earlier this year mentioned the possibility of sharing ad revenue with “thread” authors.

Moderation at half mast

The moderation of the platform had been under fire for several months, while the layoff of thousands of employees (representing between 50 and 70% of the workforce) weakened the human moderation part. Some 67,000 banned Twitter accounts for non-compliance with the rules (incitement to violence, harassment, misinformation, etc.) have also been restored.

Consequence: conspiracy theories spread further, alert various associations and Russian and Chinese troll accounts thrive, because the platform can no longer detect them.

With this measure, Twitter advocates for transparency, and also gives users the opportunity to challenge this label. “Currently, asking for feedback does not guarantee that you will receive a response or that your tweet’s reach will be restored,” the announcement reads. “We are working to allow the authors to appeal our decision.”
