Neuralink, one of billionaire Elon Musk’s new companies, announced Thursday that it has received approval from US health authorities to test brain implants in humans.
“This is an important first step that will one day allow our technology to help many people,” the Californian company declared on the social network Twitter, adding that “recruitment for clinical trials is not yet open.”
Neuralink designs devices to be implanted in the brain to communicate with computers directly through thought.
The initial goal is to help people who are paralyzed or suffer from neurological diseases.
TO start up he then intends to make these implants safe and reliable enough to be used and “equip” brains with computing capability.
For Elon Musk, these ‘chips’ should allow humanity to achieve a “symbiosis with artificial intelligence (AI)”, according to a speech at the company’s annual conference in 2022.
The billionaire said he fears that artificial intelligence systems could overtake humans and take control.
In March he founded X.AI, a new company specializing in AI, presumably to rival OpenAI, the company that conceived ChatGPT, a successful AI program capable of interacting with humans and producing all kinds of text on demand.
