Electrical storms: three applications to anticipate future precipitation

Although very violent storms remain difficult to predict accurately, some smartphone apps allow you to better anticipate clouds arriving overhead.

This Sunday, June 11, offered its share of bad weather throughout France with more than 20,000 registered lightning strikes and significant accumulations of precipitation throughout the territory, particularly in Toulouse and the Paris region.

This bad weather sometimes takes the towns by surprise. While it remains difficult to accurately predict these phenomena, many smartphone apps now make it possible to better anticipate future showers and storms.

Windy

Specialized in wind forecast, Windy app also offers many features to study clouds, waves and also thunder. The interactive map of the application thus offers a meteorological radar that shows the evolution of the precipitations during the last hour with, like a little fantasy, a vibration with each thunderclap.

By viewing the direction of rain or storms at a given point at accelerated speed, it is possible to know if bad weather is coming or not, by zooming in on your geolocation.

Windy also offers a premium version, which offers more detailed forecast maps and the ability to go back more than an hour in time. An improved forecast invoice between 20.99 euros and 34.99 euros.

It’ll rain today

It is one of the most well-known weather forecast apps, and is currently number 1 on the App Store in the “Weather” category: RainToday. With a very basic design, this free application lets you know when the rain will arrive in your city.

RainToday also provides access to weather radar that allows you to go back an hour in the past but see the next hour to predict the next rain.

This free application is specialized, as its name indicates, in showing all lightning strikes in the territory, but also beyond borders such as England, Spain or Italy. My Lightning Tracker thus makes it possible to identify the exact or almost number of lightning strikes in the last moments.

The app also offers, like many, a weather radar that allows you to see the upcoming precipitation in your location. In fact, the map represents bad weather on a national scale, but also gives access to local data by zooming in on a specific point.

Keep in mind that dozens of apps offer this kind of functionality. Apple’s “Weather” app has been offering up to the next 12 hours of rainfall previews for the past few months, scaling from “weak” to “extreme.” To ensure, before an outing, the need or not to carry an umbrella.
