Amazonas fire chief Orleilson Muniz said he feared the death toll would rise.
“Some people are talking about eight, 12, 15 victims,” the commander said, quoted by Brazilian news portal G1.
“We identified a van” [uma carrinha com nove lugares] where many people were inside, [mas] we still haven’t found the people,” explained Muniz.

State news agency Agência Brasil said at least 12 vehicles went to the bottom of the Curuçá River after the bridge collapsed.
According to witnesses quoted by the G1, the passage was blocked by trucks.
A few days ago, traffic police had partially restricted access to the bridge due to alleged structural problems.
