Expert says wreck of Titan

Debris has been found in the area of the Titanic, the US Coast Guard said Thursday, as part of the search for the submarine Titan, which disappeared into the North Atlantic on Sunday with five people on board. An expert quoted by Sky News and the BBC indicates the wreckage is of the Titan, but there is no official information yet.

“A debris field has been discovered in the search area, by an ROV, near the Titanic. Specialists from the unified command post are evaluating the information,” can be read in a message from the US Northeast Coast Guard posted on Twitter.

The wreckage was discovered by the remote-controlled vehicle (ROV) of the Canadian ship Horizon Arctic, according to the statement from the US Coast Guard, which reports a press conference scheduled for 8 p.m. (Lisbon time) on this new information.

David Mears, a rescue expert quoted by Sky News and the BBC, said the wreckage found belongs to the Titan. They are a “landing structure and a tailgate of the submarine”, said the expert, who is friends with two of the Titan’s occupants.

David Mears told Sky News that he belongs to a Whatsapp group involving The Explorers Club. He pointed out that it was the president of this club, which is “directly linked” to the vessels involved in the search operations, who gave the information that the wreck corresponds to the “landing structure” and “a tailgate of the submarine”. .

“This means that the hull has not yet been found, but two very important parts of the whole system have been discovered. It would not be possible to find them unless they were fragmented,” the expert told Sky News.

During this afternoon, CNN International pointed out that a A Canadian ship with a specialized medical team was already at the site of the search operations for Titan, as well as a hyperbaric chamber, with capacity for up to six people, according to information from an officer of the Armed Forces of Canada.

It was on Sunday that the submarine Titan, owned by Ocean Gates Expeditions, disappeared into the North Atlantic while descending for a tourist visit to the remains of the Titanic, which is located at a depth of about 3,800 meters.. The ship sank on its maiden voyage in 1912 after striking an iceberg, killing 1,500 passengers and crew.

The US Coast Guard, supported by several aircraft and ships, today intensified the search to find the submarine and remove the five people on board.

British businessman and explorer Hamish Harding, 58, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and son Suleman Dawood, 19, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, a French explorer and former naval officer, also known as “Mister Titanic”. as Stockton Rush, 61, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, responsible for the trip.

The estimated 96 hours to provide the Titan crew with oxygen have already run out. However, experts recognize that this is a vague and inaccurate estimate, and oxygen time can vary significantly depending on several variables.

Authorities hope underwater sounds, which are still being monitored, could help narrow down searches, whose coverage area has expanded to several thousand miles.

However, experts involved in the search point to several obstacles, from pinpointing the ship’s location, to reaching it with rescue equipment, to bringing it to the surface – assuming it’s still intact.
