Iran supports Russian rule of law, sees rebellion as an ‘internal matter’

The Iranian government expressed its support for the “rule of law” in Russia on Saturday, after the rebellion of the mercenary group Wagner, a situation that it described as an “internal matter.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the rule of law in the Russian Federation,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kanani said in a public statement.

The diplomat said that the “recent events” on Russian territory are an “internal matter” of Russia, without going into further details.

Relations between Iran and Russia have strengthened in the last year, since the invasion of Ukraine, in economic, political and military matters, given the international sanctions that harm their economies.

In addition to increasing trade between the two countries, Tehran has sold drones to Russia for use in the invasion of Ukraine, according to Western accusations, which Tehran denies.

At the same time, Moscow reportedly sold Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets to Tehran, which have yet to be delivered to the country.

The head of the Wagner paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, today claimed the occupation of Rostov, a key city in southern Russia for the war in Ukraine, and called for a rebellion against the Russian military command, which he accused of attacking its fighters.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the paramilitary group’s action a rebellion, saying it was a “deadly threat” to the Russian state and treason, guaranteeing a “civil war” would not ensue.
