Fighters of the Wagner group retreat from the Voronezh region

Fighters of the Russian mercenary group Wagner withdrew from Russia’s Voronezh region, the scene of the aborted march on its way to Moscow, the governor of that city close to the border with Ukraine announced on Sunday morning.

“The units of the Wagner paramilitary group are completing their withdrawal from the territory of the Voronezh region,” Governor Alexander Gusev wrote on Telegram, assuring that everything is proceeding “normally, without incident.”

Early Saturday afternoon, the governor of that Russian region had announced “countermeasures” in view of Wagner’s advance, after this paramilitary group claimed Friday the occupation of Rostov, a key city in southern Russia before the war. in Ukraine, north through Voronezh towards Moscow.

However, at the end of Saturday afternoon, the head of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, stopped the movements of the uprising against the Russian military command, after negotiating an agreement with the president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin described the group’s action as an insurrection, saying it represented a “mortal threat” to the Russian state and treachery, guaranteeing there would be no “civil war”.

Earlier, the head of the paramilitary group accused the Russian army of attacking its mercenary camps, causing “a very large number of casualties”, accusations that expose deep tensions within Moscow’s armed forces over the offensive in Ukraine.
