Biden and Zelensky talked about the failed Wagner Rebellion

In a brief statement, the White House said the two leaders discussed “recent events in Russia” and also expressed the United States’ “unwavering support” for Ukraine.

In addition, according to the note, the heads of state spoke of “the ongoing counter-offensive in Ukraine,” with President Biden reaffirming the U.S.’s continued support “in security, economic and humanitarian aid.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media that he discussed the situation in Russia with Biden, reporting a “positive and inspiring conversation” with the US president.

“The world must put pressure on Russia until international order is restored,” he argued.

Still according to Zelensky, talks also included “deepening defense cooperation, with an emphasis on long-range weapons,” as well as the next NATO summit, scheduled for mid-July in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The head of the Wagner paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, on Saturday suspended movements of the uprising in Russia against the military command, less than 24 hours after occupying Rostov, a key city in the south of the country before the war in Ukraine .

Before the suspension, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin described the group’s action as a rebellion and said it represented a “mortal threat” to the Russian state and treason.

Prigozhin had previously accused the Russian military of attacking his mercenary camps, causing “a very large number of casualties”, allegations denied by the Russian Defense Ministry.

Prigozhin’s accusations expose deep tensions within Moscow’s troops over the offensive in Ukraine.

At the end of the day, Prigozhin announced that he had negotiated an agreement with the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
