Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis vowed Monday to end birthright citizenship, complete construction of the southern border wall and send the military to fight drug cartels in Mexico.
This immigration policy proposal was presented in Eagle Pass, Texas, a US-Mexico border city, by the governor of Florida, a candidate in the 2024 elections, representing a list of Republican immigration proposals that reflect policies of former US President Donald Trump.
DeSantis’ plan calls for reversing US legal precedent or even amending the US Constitution.
“I’ve listened to people in DC for years and years and years, for decades, Republicans and Democrats, always talking about it, but never coming to a conclusion,” DeSantis told an audience of about 100 people.
DeSantis, by choosing immigration to lead the bill, is prioritizing a controversial issue that has long been the focus of more conservative Republican voters.
An AP-NORC poll finds that, on average, six in 10 adults in the US disapprove of President Joe Biden’s handling of immigration.
DeSantis has vowed to end the political call allowing immigrants to be released into the country illegally before trial dates because federal immigration authorities have money for only 30,000 beds, making it impossible to detain everyone.
DeSantis also vowed to reinstate Mexico’s stay policy to make asylum seekers wait in Mexico for US immigration court hearings, a plan that needs Mexico’s approval.
DeSantis also vowed to use military force against drug cartels if necessary.
DeSantis “reserves the right to operate across the border to protect our territory from the activities of Mexican cartels,” according to the plan.
“We are going to use all the leverage at our disposal against Mexico and all the powers at our disposal against the cartels,” he told the Eagle Pass hearing.
