More than 1,000 people, suspected victims of human trafficking, were rescued by police in the Philippines on Monday. The victims were in the country to work at an online casino in Manila after accepting jobs advertised through Facebook.
Among the victims will be Chinese, Vietnamese and Malaysian nationals, who allegedly worked as “online game assistants”.
“This is initially a case of human trafficking,” said Michelle Sabino, spokeswoman for the anti-cybercrime group of the Philippine National Police, quoted by the AFP news agency.
The Philippine authorities admit that there are more similar cases in the country and guarantee that everything will be investigated.
In May, more than 1,000 people from various Asian countries were rescued who had been smuggled to the Philippines, held captive, and forced to participate in online scams.
International concern about internet fraud in the Asia-Pacific region has increased, often with victims of trafficking tricked or coerced into promoting bogus cryptocurrency investments.
