The Belarusian president considered this Tuesday that the tensions between the Russian mercenary company Wagner and the Moscow Army were “mismanaged” and that was what caused “the confrontation” over the weekend.
“The situation got away from us and then we thought it would be resolved, but it was not resolved,” Lukashenko told reporters, quoted by the Belarusian state news agency Belta, adding that “there are no heroes in this story.”
The head of state of Belarus, Vladimir Putin’s main ally, earlier said he had ordered the Minsk army to “prepare for combat” in the wake of the “rebellion” by the Wagner mercenary company in Russia.
“I have given all the orders for the Army [da Bielorrússia] Be fully combat ready,” Alexander Lukashenko was quoted as saying by the Belarusian state news agency Belta.
The measure was taken as a result of the “rebellion” of the Wagner group last Friday and Saturday.
The leader of the Wagner company, Yevgeny Prigozhin, plans, according to the Kremlin, to travel to Belarus after agreeing to end the coup.
Meanwhile, the Russian authorities have announced the drop of charges against the group of fighters in the pay of the Wagner company, headed by Yevgeny Prigozhin.
“It has been established” that the participants in the riots “put an end to actions that were directly aimed at committing a crime,” the Russian security service (FSB) said today, quoted by Moscow news agencies.
In these circumstances, “the decision to drop the charges was made on June 27 [hoje]”added the FSB.
Over the weekend, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who leads the Wagner group, led a 24-hour armed rebellion, with the mercenaries seizing the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and advancing to within 200 kilometers of Moscow.
The rebellion ended with an “agreement” brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, which, according to the Kremlin, establishes that Prigozhin go into exile in Belarus, in exchange for immunity for himself and his mercenaries.
Yevgeny Prigozhin justified the “rebellion” on Monday as the need to “save” the organization, denied having attempted a coup and added that 30 contract fighters had died in clashes with the Russian army.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a speech broadcast on Russian television on Monday, accused those responsible for the rebellion of being traitors and said their actions only benefited Ukraine and Kiev’s allies.
