A large rescue operation was then launched to try to save the passengers of the ship, which was supposed to have air reserves for about four days, to finally discover that the submersible, shortly after its dive, had been struck by a “catastrophic implosion” that killed everyone. five men instantly.

A “crazy” rescue plan

At first, Ed Cassano of Pelagic Research Services reminded the press that he was “focused on rescuing” the people on board. A remote-controlled vehicle, suitable for deep water, was then deployed.

“Our rescue plan was, immediately after finding Titan, to hold on to it as quickly as possible and start its recovery. It was crazy,” he said.

But the hopes of rescue did not last long because, 1h30 after its launch, Odysseus 6K discovered debris.

“Shortly after reaching the bottom of the sea, we discovered the remains of the Titan submarine (…) The rescue turned into recovery,” said Ed Cassano, with tears in his eyes, recalling that his teams had received the news with “great emotion ”. .

On Wednesday, the US Coast Guard announced that “presumptive human remains” were discovered in the wreckage of the submarine. These remains, “carefully collected from the rubble at the crash site,” will be analyzed, as well as the debris from the found ship, which should provide “crucial elements to understand the cause of this tragedy,” said Captain Jason Neubauer, who is leading the Coast Guard investigation into the tragedy.
