The Russian security service FSB claims to have prevented an assassination attempt on the governor of the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Moscow, in 2014. The Ukrainian secret hired and trained him to plant a bomb in Sergei Aksyonov’s car.
“An assassination attempt organized by the Ukrainian special services against the head of the Republic of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, has been stopped,” the FSB announced.
So far, there is no reaction from kyiv.
The Russian security service says the detained suspect is “a Russian citizen, born in 1988, who had been recruited by the Ukrainian security service (SBU).” According to information released by Moscow, the suspect was detained while “removing the explosive from his hiding place.”
Crimea was annexed to Moscow in 2014 following a referendum that kyiv and Western countries called a “sham.” The peninsula has been the target of attacks and attacks in recent months, attacks that Moscow blames on kyiv.
