International Center for Support Cases Against Russians Begins Functions

An international center was opened at Eurojust’s headquarters in The Hague on Monday to support legal proceedings against senior Russian leaders for alleged crimes of aggression following the invasion of Ukraine.

The International Center for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine is the latest step in concerted global efforts to hold Russian leaders criminally responsible for the war against Ukraine.

The center is located at the headquarters of the European Union’s judicial cooperation agency, Eurojust, in The Hague, the Netherlands.

Ukrainian Attorney General Andriy Kostin said on Monday that the new body is “a clear sign that the world is united and staunch to hold the Russian regime accountable for all crimes committed.”

Still, he added that “unfortunately there is a ‘gap’ in the architecture of international criminal law regarding liability for the crime of aggression.”

The Executive Committee of the European Union is funding the initiative and today approved an initial financial support of €8.3 million.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is investigating crimes in Ukraine and has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of personal responsibility for child abductions in Ukraine.
