The leader of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, appealed this Monday from Belarus, where he has been since he left Russia after the June uprising, support for mercenary organizationand assured that “there will be new victories at the front”.
“Today your support is needed more than ever,” Prigozhin said in the first audio message since he left Russian territory after reaching an agreement with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
“Thanks for that. I want you to understand that our march for justice was aimed at ending the traitors and mobilizing society, and I think we largely achieved that.”he said, according to the message published on a Telegram social network channel linked to the Wagner Group and quoted by the Meduza news portal.
In the same message, the leader of the mercenary organization expressed “confidence” in the idea that “in the near future everyone will be able to see the group’s new victories on the frontline”
However, Prigozhin gave no details of his plans, nor did he indicate his location.
After the uprising of members of the Wagner Group last June, Prigozhin issued a single statement giving his version of events and guaranteeing that it was not his intention to “overthrow the regime”.
The Kremlin (Russian Presidency) admitted that Prigozhin could move to Belarus as part of an agreement to end the uprising, something confirmed by the Belarusian president himself, Alexander Lukashenko.
In recent months, Prigozhin’s harsh and frequent remarks have sparked controversy on several occasions, most notably when he accused the Russian oligarchy and military leaders of “fooling” Putin into invading Ukraine.
