The Russian region of North Ossetia, on the border with Georgia, restricted car access to its territory this Wednesday after massive traffic jams formed of Russians trying to escape the mobilization of reservists.
The region’s top leader, Sergey Menyaylo, signed a decree “limiting the access of passenger cars to the territory of North Ossetia”, excluding tourists and residents, the regional government announced on its account on the social network Telegram.
Under the new order, people going to holiday camps or other tourist facilities will be able to enter and a state of alert will be declared in several districts, including the regional capital Vladikavkaz.
The restrictions will complicate travel between Vladikavkaz and the Georgian capital Tbilisi, 200 kilometers to the south, where many Russian citizens have arrived since President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilization of reservists to fight in Ukraine. , which invaded Russia last February 24.
Since last week, tens of thousands of Russians have left for Georgia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia, an exodus that has forced Russian security forces to set up a mobile office on the Georgian border to intercept reservists trying to evade the mobilization.
According to the Georgian Interior Ministry, about 10,000 Russian citizens cross the border every day.
