Heavy rains in Zaragoza flood streets and force drivers to rescue

The heavy rains that fell on Thursday in the province of Zaragoza, Spain, flooded several roads and trapped countless people inside cars, forcing the intervention of firefighters and diving teams. Ten people were rescued, but there are no reports of injuries.

according to the countryIn just under an hour it rained up to 5.42 liters per square meter in some parts of the city, with a maximum intensity that reached 20 liters in just ten minutes.

The floods forced the interruption of tram and bus services and the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) placed the provinces of Zaragoza and Huesca on orange alert.

The most serious situation occurred in the Barranco de la Muerte, a tunnel in the Third Belt, where the avalanche of water and mud reached a height of one meter.

Parque Venecia, a neighborhood in the south of the city, was also particularly hard hit, with around 1,500 residents without power due to problems at service stations.

Due to the storm, accompanied by hail and winds of up to 92 kilometers per hour, on Avenida Ciudad de Soria and Rua Caminos del Norte, the traffic lights were left without light and the sewage systems blocked.

The heavy rains also caused damage to several homes in Cuarte de Huerva and Burgo de Ebro, a municipality where eight people, including four minors, were rescued from two homes due to the amount of water that entered the building where they lived.

Traffic on the A23 motorway was cut off at kilometer 274 towards Teruel. The accumulation of water on the railways also made it necessary to stop the movement of trains between Zaragoza and Barcelona for a few minutes, after which they were diverted to the Delicias station.

The mayoress of Zaragoza, Natalia Chueca, urged that “much prudence” be maintained in the different parts of the city most affected.

Aemet placed, this Friday, five autonomous communities under a yellow warning due to rain and strong wind, hail and heat. Thermometers in the Balearic Islands are expected to reach 36ºC.
