Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky this Friday asked NATO to resolve Ukraine and Sweden’s membership proposals, recalling that his indecision [NATO] threatens not only the foundations of a strong alliance, but also global security.
Kiev, which has been battling the Russian invasion for more than 16 months, has already expressed growing dissatisfaction with the Western allies who have given assurances that they will one day join the Ukrainians in the alliance.
Zelensky was speaking on a visit to Slovakia before heading to Turkey, where he will speak with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has once again “frozen” Sweden’s NATO candidacy.
“We need unity and this threatens the strength of our alliance,” said the Ukrainian leader, adding: “Our membership is very important for global security.”
Zelensky said Kiev expected “at least positive results, or something like that” from the Vilnius summit next week.
“I believe that the situation vis-à-vis the aggressor, Russia, will depend on this [cimeira de Vilnius]”, he underlined.
“Putin expects the world to show weakness and division, and this cannot be allowed,” reiterated Zelensky, who also hopes to “hear not just promises without clear deadlines” at the summit.
The representative of the Ukrainian nation arrived in neighboring Slovakia after being in Prague (Czech Republic) and will travel on to Istanbul, Turkey, where he will speak with Turkish President Erdogan at the end of the day on Friday.
