About 8.3% of the population of the European Union (EU) could not afford a meal with meat, fish or a vegetarian equivalent every two days in 2022, Eurostat announced on Monday.
It appears that compared to 2021 (7.3%), the rate has increased by one percentage point.
Taking into account only the proportion of the population at risk of poverty in the EU, who were also unable to afford an adequate meal every two days last year, the percentage stands at 19.7%, compared to 17, 5% in 2021.
According to data published this Monday by the European Statistical Service, the highest percentage of people at risk of poverty unable to afford a meal of meat, fish or vegetarian equivalent every two days was recorded in Bulgaria (44, 6%), followed by Romania (43.0%) and Slovakia (40.5%).
On the other side of the table are Ireland (5.0%), Luxembourg (5.1%) and Cyprus (5.6%).
In Portugal, the percentage of people at risk of poverty who could not afford an adequate meal was 7.2% in 2022, falling to 3.0% in the proportion for the country’s total population.
