Chinese President Xi Jinping assured the leader of the upper house of the Russian parliament on Tuesday that China will continue to deepen the partnership with Russia, during a meeting in Beijing.
“The development of China-Russia relations is a strategic choice made by both sides based on their respective fundamental interests,” Xi Jinping was quoted as saying by state television CCTV, to Valentina Matviyenko, president of the Russian Federation Council, the upper house of Parliament in Russia. .
“Thanks to the joint efforts of the two sides, China-Russia relations have reached a healthy and stable pace of development. Cooperation in various fields has steadily advanced, and the foundation of public opinion and friendship between the two societies have grown stronger over generations,” Xi noted.
China is willing to continue working with Russia to develop the comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation, “aimed at promoting the building of a prosperous, stable and just world,” he added.
The meeting with Matviyenko came on the heels of a four-day visit to Beijing by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who met several senior Chinese officials in Beijing, but not Xi Jinping.
Quoted by Russia’s Tass news agency, Matviyenko said Russia would continue to cooperate with Beijing and could count on China’s “firm and reliable shoulder.”
Matviyenko, president of the Federation Council since 2011, is Russia’s third government official after President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
Chinese media did not say whether the war in Ukraine was discussed during the meeting. Hailing the “highest level in history” of ties between the two countries, Matviyenko said the Russian parliament widely supports the deepening of bilateral cooperation and is ready to further strengthen exchanges and dialogue with the National People’s Congress of China, with the aim of providing legal guarantees. for the implementation of the consensus between Moscow and Beijing, CCTV reported.
China has significantly improved ties with Russia in recent years. Beijing has refused to condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and has criticized the imposition of sanctions against Moscow. China considers the association with the neighboring country essential to oppose the liberal democratic order, led by the United States.
Xi noted that during his visit to Moscow last March, he reached an important agreement with Putin on deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership and practical cooperation in various fields between the two countries.
The Chinese leader told Matviyenko that their legislative bodies should legislate to promote “sustainable and healthy development of cooperation.”
He added that the two sides should also strengthen the collaboration of multilateral organizations – such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the BRICS bloc of emerging economies – to lead global governance reform and safeguard the common interests of two emerging markets and two countries.
