Moscow warned Ankara on Tuesday that no one in Europe wants to see Turkey inside the European Union (EU), after Brussels opened the way for the exchange of that membership for Sweden’s entry into NATO.
“Türkiye may be oriented towards the West. We know that in the history of the Republic of Turkey there have been periods of intense orientation towards the West. But we also know very well that (…) nobody wants to see Turkey in Europe, “said the Kremlin spokesman for the gate, Dmitry Peskov.
The spokesman advised the Turkish authorities not to look at this situation with “rose-colored glasses”, recalling that the possibility of Turkey entering the EU is a distant reality, despite the fact that Ankara has given the green light to Sweden’s entry. in NATO.
“Despite all the divergences that are already known, we intend to maintain our dialogue and our relations with the Republic of Turkey,” Peskov explained, quoted by the Russian agency TASS.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked the EU on Monday to speed up Turkey’s accession process, as a condition for authorizing Sweden’s entry into NATO, unlocking a complex deadlock in the Atlantic Alliance.
