Former Brazilian minister and deputy diplomat Sergio Amaral passed away

Former Brazilian minister Sérgio Amaral, considered one of the most brilliant and distinguished diplomats in the South American country, died at the age of 79.

The causes of his death were not revealed, but the Folha de São Paulo newspaper said it was due to a “stroke”.

According to the newspaper, Amaral had been hospitalized in São Paulo since April for prostate cancer treatment.

Sergio Amaral was Minister of Industry and Commerce and spokesman for the Presidency of the Republic during the government of Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-2002), during which he also held other important positions.

Throughout his long public career, he was Ambassador of Brazil to London (1999-2001), Paris (2003-2005) and more recently Washington (2016-2019)with the traditional pragmatic style that characterizes Brazilian diplomacy.

Brazil’s Vice President and current Minister of Industry and Commerce, Geraldo Alckmin, said he received “with deep regret the news of the death of Ambassador Sergio Amaral”, who “has made an enormous contribution to Brazilian diplomacy and public service” .
